International Cargo Seaport: Port of Hai Phong

Port of Hai Phong is the second-largest container port in Vietnam. It has played a critical role in the country’s economy ever since its establishment in 1874. The port development continued for over a century until it became the leading operator today.

About Port of Hai Phong

Port of Hai Phong is situated within the economic triangle areas of Hanoi – Haiphong – Quang Ninh, which are known for their enhanced transportation system. This port is set to be rebuilt and rebranded as the international-scale Port of Lach Huyen. The construction is still going on today, involving the formation of an island connected to the mainland via the bridge. More than that, a new three container terminals and bulk terminal will be built. When the process is completed, the port will hold the title of “one of Vietnam’s deepest ports” with 14 meters’ draft and capable of receiving up to 100,000 DWT.

This seaport occupies the shoreline of Cam River and has three main docks: Hoang Dieu as its central terminal near the downtown, Chua Ve, and Dinh Vu, which are in the far east of the shore.

The History

This port has a long history that dates back to the late 18th century. Hai Phong, a city where the port is located, and the name is taken, was originally an ordinary coastal area. It was not until 1974 that the town was developed into a seaport with the French for their trading activities. Ever since, the Port has remained important for the economy in the region and serves as the outport of Hanoi, the country’s capital.

Volume of Transaction in Port of Hai Phong

It is recognized as one of 20 seaports that can handle super-heavy ships. During the three quarters of 2021, the Vietnam government recorded an impressive 536 million goods passing through the Vietnam seaports. Among those numbers, the volume of transactions in the Port of Hai Phong is said to see a 15% increase from the previous years.

Interesting Facts

One of the unique facts about this port is that it was established a few years before the city itself. The city of Hai Phong was founded by the French colony as a seaport city in 1887, approximately 13 years after the port started its operations.

Hai Phong is the third densest city in the country, being the house of more than 2 million souls in a 1,507-kilometer square area. Aside from the highly-busy day to day business in the port, Hai Phong has many attractions worth visiting by tourists. It is notable for its seafood dishes.

As the city is geographically close to the sea, people can enjoy various delicacies, such as crabs, shrimps, squids, and fish, at a very affordable price. It became famous worldwide after the cuisine was successfully promoted during European Brest Maritime Festivals in 2008.

Today, the Port is a modern and busy port. As the city keeps undergoing developments in various aspects, it serves as not only a business core but also tourism attractions.
