About the Qingdao Port

Forty kilometers south of Qingdao city is the Qingdao Port on the Yellow Sea, a marginal sea popularly known for its navigation and several other significant Chinese ports. As one of the world’s busiest seaports, this port is made up of the Dongjiakou, Qianwan, and Dagang port areas, as well as the Guangdong that specifically handles oil tankers.

The Port of Qingdao, which is run by the Group known as the Qingdao Port Authority previously, is a full-service international port. They provide a vast iron ore management facility, in addition to the Qingdao Cosport International Container Terminal and the Qingdao Qianwan Container Terminal.

They also provide container logistics, storage, loading, and unloading service for bulk commodities such as grain, crude oil, coal, and more. International passenger connections are also available.

Over 450 ports in hundreds of territories and countries have been working actively together with this port. As it operates within China’s Pacific shoreline and Yellow River area, the port has become an important center for sea-going transit and global commerce.

The History

The Port first opened its doors in 1892. Its beginning goes as far back as August 1949 when the Port Authority of the People’s Government of Qingdao was formed. Qingdao SASAC, with a listed capital of RMB1,860 million, changed it later in January 2003 into a 100% state-owned business with limited liability.

Ten years afterward, the company established another limited liability company, allowing the Qingdao Port Group to transfer its principal operations (“Reorganization”). The group currently owns 58.45% equity.

The Qingdao Port is so prolific that more municipal taxes have been generated for seven consecutive years compared to any other Qingdao company. They are also well-known for their excellent performance, proven with over 100 honorary titles at the state level. Some of them are the Superlative Enterprise in Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection, National Environment-Friendly Enterprises, National Quality Management Award, etc.

The port ranks seventh among the world’s busiest seaports in terms of overall cargo throughput. They can handle the world’s largest ships as well as massive cargo quantities. For the inbound iron ore, it tops many other international ports. It surpasses all other Chinese ports for incoming oil products, proving how it also belongs to China’s second busiest global commerce terminal.

The port transported cargo up to 350.1 million tons in 2010, including 12 million TEUs of containerized goods. This freight traffic has far surpassed the targets outlined in their 10th and 11th Five-Year Plans.
